10 World’s Greenest Countries

The Environmental Performance Index (EPI) is a method of measuring the performance of national governments related to environmental policies. Yale University and Columbia University release the EPI every year during the World Economic Forum, ranking 163 countries according to 25 indicators. The final mark shows how close the country is to accomplish the environmental goals . Here are the top ten green countries on the list which have made most, officially the greenest in the world.

Iceland, 93.5
Iceland is considered to be one of the world’s most beautiful countries because of the breathtaking nature, but they can still enjoy that due to the high level of accomplishing the environmental policy goals. People in Iceland use the geothermal energy very well, while the most used electricity and heat source is the hydrogen. Believe it or not, amazing 82% of the electricity and heat in Iceland comes from hydrogen and geothermal sources, while only 18% comes from coal. The first place for the greenest country is well deserved.

2  Switzerland, 89.1
Switzerland was leading the EPI list years ago, but now has fallen to the second place just due to incredible Iceland performance. However, Swiss are still working hard for creating greener society. The government has imposed a fee for disposing thrash in the country, but the people are pretty interested for ecology as well. For example, there are cities, smaller towns actually, in which using car is prohibited. That’s how Switzerland remains on the top of this list for years.

Costa Rica, 86.4
Costa Rica government is strongly committed to following the Icelandic example for use of renewable energy sources. They have set a goal to become carbon neutral until 2021! The land suffered deforestation for years in order to be made space for agriculture, but now one of the main goals is reforestation of the country, planting over five million trees over last five years.

Sweden, 86.0
One of the first things when visiting Stockholm, Sweden, is noticing the wide range of eco-friendly products. Nevertheless, the most important thing that put them so high on the EPI list is the fact that they are in advanced phase of the implementation of the plan for phasing out the fossil fuel by 2020. Swedish government also is trying hard to use the forests very well, as the sawdust of the lumber is used for generating heat. These are just some of the indicators that make Sweden on of the greenest on the world, but explaining all of them would take a lot of space.

Norway, 81.1
Norway already feels the consequences of the global warming, as its north parts are close to the melting Arctic, so they’re taking a lot of measure to prevent any possible catastrophic scenario. Norway government and the people as well, are making efforts to become carbon neutral until 2030, although it is an oil export oriented country. They plan to make diesel fuel more expensive than the eco fuels and stimulate people to use the second ones.

6 Mauritius, 80.6
Maybe you will be surprised of the fact that one African Prime Minister decide to make his country eco-friendly, but yes, it’s true. Although the little island has very limited resources, they do not give up. Rama Sithanen’s cabinet is trying to find many ways for reuse items through recycling. At this moment they rely on the water that surrounds the island.

France, 78.2
The indicators that launched France so high on the EPI list are increasing of use of eco fuels, conserving energy, increasing renewable energy rate, increasing of organic farming, etc. In order to stimulate the use of eco friendly energy sources, the government also promoted reduction of taxes for those who use solar panels. However, the most interesting measure toward accomplishing their eco goals is the use of, believe it or not, the straw bales for construction of buildings.

Austria, 78.1
Austria has no problems for being green so they decided to go step further. They made a deal with the government of Czech Republic for building eco friendly garden across the border between the two countries. The gardens contain herbs, fruit trees and flowers; they look amazing, though they do not use any pesticides for maintaining it. For the rest of the green country there’s no need to waste words.

Cuba, 78.1
Cuba has earned the same index as Austria mostly thanks to the decreasing of the use of harmful and illegal pesticides on farms. Allegedly, they try to lower the sea level in order to prevent the salt water ruin the soil. However, their most ambitious project is the use of clear hydroelectricity in the Guama area. The government makes efforts to connect all of the homes in that area to hydroelectric station and provide them all the electricity they need. Should that make success, other projects will follow.

10 Colombia, 76.8
Most news we hear for Colombia are not good, so this including on the Top 10 EPI countries is really refreshing. The government learnt the lessons and finally decided to end the deforestation and stimulated a lot of eco friendly projects. Constructors began using bamboo instead of steel; a lot of national parks have been opened in order to be saved the large number of endemic species, while the fashion designers have also tried to raise the awareness about the green issues.

10 Places That Could Disappear Due To Global Warming

We just do not do enough to protect our planet. The temperatures are rising, the sea levels rise as well, and now there are many places that could simply disappear. The list is very long, we choose just ten of them for this list.

Maldives
These famous paradise-looking tropical islands are well known for its white-sand beaches and they have always been one of tourists’ favorite sites. Unfortunately, the Global Warming could end the enjoyment in the 600 miles-stretching islands. As 80 percent of the country is only 3.3 feet above the sea level, the continuous rising of the ocean level turn the alarm on for the beautiful islands. With the current ocean-rising dynamics, Maldives could disappear before 2050.

 Bangkok, Thailand
Bangkok is also one of the world’s most popular exotic destinations, but also one of the places that could disappear due to global warming . The city is already sinking due to its too heavy urbanization on its too soft underground as well as the excessive pumping of groundwater. The location also makes the city exposed to floods, especially in the monsoon season. All these factors could send Bangkok underwater before the end of this century.

Mississippi River Delta, United States
The great American river runs into the Gulf of Mexico in a breathtaking delta rivers, marshes, and low-lying barrier islands. You guess, the rising of the sea level could destroy this landscape. However, that’s not the only way for Global Warming to damage this region, as it’s exposed to many sea storms and hurricanes. We all remember Katrina in New Orleans.

Komodo Island, Indonesia
The home of the world’s most famous reptile could end under the water surface in few decades if the Global Warming continues to progress. The sea surrounding the island is growing and could cause extinction of the Komodo dragon, but the increased acidification could also cause big damage, as it make the surface temperature higher, which may eventually kill the corals around the island and destroy the amazing diving sites.

Great Barrier Reef, Australia
The delicate ecosystem of one of the world’s most beautiful sites is under threat since the temperatures has begun growing. There is a large variety of fish and other marine species which depend on the coral for survival. As the coral reef is nearing death, its flora and fauna is nearing the same destiny. It could all disappearing just because of the rising temperatures.

Tokyo, Japan
Tokyo is one of the world’s largest metropolises, allegedly great to live in, but the climate change effects tell different story. It suffers from the phenomenon called “heat islands,” which means that factory emission and the artificial heat from cars cause local greenhouse effect. As the temperatures continue to rise, Tokyo will have bigger and bigger problems with the heat.

Venice, Italy
For some people it’s might be hard to believe that a city which lies on water could suffer from global warming, but the recent measures say different. Actually, the city is slowly sinking anyway, about nine inches per 100 years, but the recent climate conditions could make things worse. A new barrier which could withstand a 100 feet deluge is under construction, but experts say that new measures should be done in order to be sure that it could be enough to save the city from disappearing.

River Thames, London
The River Thames has been pride of London for centuries, but today it turns to be one of the greatest threats for the city. Since the early Middle Ages the city has been expanding into the river, making its course narrower. A great barrier was built back in 19th century in order to prevent floods, but the rising of sea level could prove this system inefficient and transform Thames into part of the sea.

Big Sur, California, United States
The coastline between Los Angeles and San Francisco is certainly one of the most beautiful landscapes in North America. Unfortunately, there is possibility for the global warming to destroy the ecosystem and the landscape itself, as the raised temperatures lead to wildfires. However, the government of California has taken steps toward finding solutions about environmental issues in last few years, which make us hope that Big Sur won’t be one of those places that could disappear due to the global warming.

10 Panama Canal, Panama
The Panama Canal made a revolution in world’s trade when opened in 1914, offering great alternative for ship which had to move from Atlantic to Pacific and opposite. There is one interesting challenge with which ships are facing – there’s 85 feet of elevation between the oceans. The solution was found in vast amounts of increasingly scarce fresh water, but some shortages in last few years have forced several closures of the canal.

7 Truly Weird Animal Species

The Yeti Crab
The only recently discovered Yeti Crab, long, furry appendages sticking from it that look for all the world  like a sea sloth of some variety, was found during a deep-sea diving expedition in 2006, inhabiting the Pacific Ocean floor, so completely unknown to biologists that a complete new taxonomic family group had to be named to include it. Yeti Crabs are blind and white, their fur supporting colonies of bacteria , as it thrives in the warm waters close by hydrothermal vents, 7,500 ft below the waves.

The Almiqui Solenodon
Until 2003, when the creature was rediscovered in the eastern mountains of Cuba, the Almiqui was believed extinct, by naturalists, for several decades. Belonging in the family group of the Haitian Solenodon, the Almiqui has unusual feature, among mammals,  having saliva which is venomous. Not been seen since 1977, there was great delight when a farmer found a live specimen in 2003. Discovered during the 19th century, and only sighted thirty-six times in 150 years, this creature was highly elusive. The wholesale felling of rainforest decimated all Solenodon populations, and pet dogs, along with house cats, accounted for many more, though it now seems they are slowly coming back.

The Giant Isopod
One of the most disgusting bugs you may never actually see is the truly horrid looking Giant Isopod. Appearing for all the world to be a real-life, pig size cockroach the isopod is in reality related to shrimp and crabs, and a crustacean. Scavengers that feast on the bodies of dead creatures , they wander around the sea floor between 600 and 7,000ft down in the oceans, feasting mainly on dead fish, squid and whale.

The Sao Tome Shrew
Very rarely seen by any human, the  species known as the São Tomé shrew remains very much a mystery, detailed information on appearance and habits very scarce. A male of this species was caught in 1982,almost a full century after it was firs known of their existence.. This secretive mammal was described as having a body covered in dark brown fur,  with long, pink tail, pink feet, and hind legs long enough to be used for both jumping or climbing With rather small, dark eyes, half hidden by facial fur, and large, forward facing ears, the Almiqui has an unusually long snout, surrounded by  pale whiskers

The Mola Mola/Sunfish
Mola mola, as it is known in native language, but which we would call the Sunfish, is the heaviest in the world as far as bony fish go, averaging as adults 1,000 kg in weight. These behemoths exist by eating mainly jellyfish, but this nutritionally poor prey animal must be consumed in large amounts, if the Sunfish are to develop and maintain their enormous bodies. Females produce more eggs, at one time, than any other vertebrate known on earth. Unfortunately for these magnificent creatures, over-fishing, and a terrible proliferation of plastic waste, often consumed by them in error, causes far too many to expire prematurely, so the species is highly endangered.

The Long beaked Echidna
Long-beaked echidnas are neither anteater nor porcupine, instead being very rare, egg-laying mammals, only known to exist in Papua New Guinea. A relative of the platypus, this nocturnal creature spends virtually all its time underground, using the tubular  snout in the hunt  for prey such as worms or insect larvae. Soft foods are the only option, because the echidna does not possess teeth. Hatchlings,  known as ‘puggles’, reside in a sticky pouch on the mothers underside, receiving milk from mammary patches.

 The Longeared Jeboa
The nocturnal, mouse-like Long-eared Jerboa, shaped rather like a tiny kangaroo,  employs an elongated tail, and powerful hind legs, for jumping, both as transport mode and escape mechanism. This highly endangered rodent is found only in the remote parts of the Mongolian Gobi desert, having ears 33% larger than its head, to better listen for prey eating mainly insects. It is the only species of its genus, making it not only rare but extraordinary.

5 really long living creatures compared to human beings

The The Antarctic sponge
The absolute granddaddy of all long lived creatures on earth are the Antarctic sponges.  Just because the environment in which they exist is so cold and hostile, these remarkable creatures have evolved to grow unbelievably slowly, so much so that scientists firmly believe that at least  one specimen has lived for no less than 1,550 years. Research is jut beginning to reveal that these ancient organisms may well be hiding medicinal secrets that could answer many of the questions posed by modern heath officials.

The Lamellibrachia Tube Worms
Colorful and extremely strange tube worms are found in deep sea waters, the most famous of them in the Gulf of Mexico, between 1500 and 2500 ft below the surface. Reaching 10 ft in length, and growing at very slow rates indeed, individuals can easily live over 250 years. Large groups, comprising up to several thousand individual worms, are the usual occurrence, with perhaps 100 different species gathered in the one place. Many are found only at these locations, known as seeps, where hydrocarbon vents, found on the ocean floor, spew out the minerals on which they feed.

The Giant Tortoise
Currently believed to be the longest living vertebrate on the planet, the Giant Tortoise is an amazing creature. An example known as Harriet, rumored to have been captured by Charles Darwin himself, was 176 years old, when died in an Australian zoo in 2006. Another specimen, of the  Aldabra species, also passed away in March 2006, and is thought to have been 255 years old at that time. The Aldabra are the only species remaining in the wild, less than twenty specimens on the Galapagos islands, of a creature with a history going back at least 250 million years..

The tantalising Tuatara

Considered to be living fossils, or even the last of the dinosaurs Tuataras have been flourishing for at least  200 million years, as a species, and are undoubtedly among the longest-living vertebrates on the planet. One captive Tuatara, known to be at least 111 years old, recently fathered its first egg, and there are suggestions that these animals can get to 200 years of age.
Greenish brown in colour, measuring up to 30 in. in length, and weigh up to 3ibs., Tuataras have spiny crests along thier backs,  male ones being more pronounced. Two rows of upper jaw teeth overlap the onelower jaw  row, a feature unique amongst all living species. These unusual creatures also possess  a paretal eye, thought to be used in judging the cycle of the seasons.

The Geoduck or Saltwater Clam
A very popular seafood in the USA and around the world comes in the form of Clams, but Geoducks,  or Saltwater Clams, are actually among the longest living creatures on the planet, having a life expectancy averaging 146 years,  though there has been one recorded as being 160 years of age. It is thought that they live so long because of low wear and tear on their bodies.

Ten Terrific Tropical Fruits

The Horned Melon
Native , in actual fact, to the Kalahari Desert, in Africa, the African Cucumber, known  by some as the  Horned Melon, is a fruit that looks exactly as the name implies that it might .  Grown  around the world in this modern age,  and often seen in New Zealand ,Australia, Chile and California, USA. The attractive, dark  green pulp, when the melon is split open, both smells and tastes, not just cucumber, as you might expect, but also of Passion Fruit, Limes and Bananas. Southern US citizen refer to it as ‘Blowfish Fruit’, often using it for decorating food , and mixing as smoothies and sundaes, when looking to create something refreshing.

The Yangmei fruit
Mainland China is where the Yangmei, or Chinese strawberry tree, is to be found,  covered, at the correct season of the year, with a bright harvest, wonderful, strawberry flavored fruits, both sweet and succulent.  The main use for this type of tree is for ornamental purposes, in parks and gardens , but the red flesh has quite distinctive sweet and sour  flavors, though half of the entire fruit is taken up by the huge seed.

The ‘Dreadful’ Durian  fruit

Often harshly judged, the Durian, also an Asian commodity, is reputed  to smell really awful, undoubtedly putting some people off, from eating it, yet the Durian is still known as ‘The King of Fruits’. because the truly delicious flesh is very versatile,  and features in many of the dishes, for which south-east Asia is famous around the world.  There are over thirty types of Durian plant, only 33% of which are actually edible, and found on market stalls.

The star shaped Carambola fruit
The Carambola, also widely known as the ‘Starfruit’, after for the shape into which it grows, is found mainly in south eastern Asia, though it could be, according to those who know, be grown easily in any other tropical location.  A five pointed star shape, when sliced, this sweet and popular fruit is rich in vitamin C and anti-oxidants, while being low in acid, sugar and sodium, yet quite delicious to eat.

The Chinese KumQuat ‘Orange’ fruit
Indisputably of Chinese origin, the Kumquat is a relatively small edible fruit, that does look something like an  orange , and coming from a tree that is distantly related to the Citrus family, could indeed be a cousin to it. Normally eaten raw, as are the fruits of citrus trees that are more familiar to us, Kumquats are also used in jellies, marmalades, and in the making of alcoholic liquors. Taiwanese people add the fruit to  tea, believing that Kumquats, boiled in water, can help sooth sore throats, among other soothing properties.

 The ubiquitous Lychee Fruit
Lychees are not only native to southern China,  though often apparently considered an exclusively Chinese fruit, but also India and Taiwan. Parent trees are evergreen, the fruits concealed behind a tough red covering,  though when exposed, they contain white flesh, textured somewhat like the more familiar  flesh of the grape-vine. Sweet ,and very much a treat for consumers, Lychee fruits  have high vitaman C contents,  and are, slowly but surely, starting to be seen on supermarket shelves across the globe, as more people get to like the taste.

The  juicy Jackfruit
Southwestern India, Bangladesh, Philippines and Sri Lanka,  are all places where one comes acrossthe Jackfruit, and it is also commonly found  in Australia, holding the distinction of being thought, by some in the fruit-selling business, to be the largest tree-borne fruit on earth .  Seeds are surrounded by a juicy, pulpy flesh, within the fruits, which apparently mildly of pineapple, the pulp employed in producing sweet chips, and  commonly used in cooking, by the local communities.

The Precious Pitaya fruit
Pitaya , much more commonly called Dragon Fruit, is made up, from a range of delicious products from several kinds of cactus plants, found in different. Asian countries. The country of origin can determine what these fruits are named, ’Strawberry Pear’ or ‘Pearl Fruit’ being examoles., With prominent black seeds, the edible flesh closely resembles Kiwi fruit  and eaten raw, has a refreshing,  if slightly sour taste, highly prized by people exercising as part of keep-fit regimes.

The Rambunctious Rambutan fruit
The Rambutan fruit, native to Malaysia, is akin to the Chinese Lychee,  in that it is covered with a spiky, leathery red skin, a garden fruit tree, very popular with local people, and among the best known of Southeast Asian fruits.  Chock full of sweet and juicy flesh, widely used for making jams, Rambutan is also  readily available in tins. Very popular, the translucent white or pink flesh not only looks good, but tastes sweet, every fruit holding a seed , apparently mildly toxic if eaten uncooked, but soft and crunchy after roasting

10 The Magnificent Mangosteen fruit
Native to the Sunda Islands, and the Moluccas, is the oddly shaped fruit known as the Mangosteen.  Trees of this variety produce  fruits purple on the outside, with creamy textures, having very unique flavours, best described as being l a cross between citrus fruit and peach. It is thought that these fruits, high in anti-oxidant properties, help lower the risk of contracting certain human diseases, including cancer, though this has yet to be proved, through proper scientific research.

Top 10 Mysterious Ghost Ships of the Maritime World

The Flying Dutchman
In maritime folklore, this ghost ship has left the maximum impact like no other by inspiring numerous paintings, films, books, opera, etc. Van der Decken, the captain, on its way towards East Indies, with sheer determination tried to steer his ship through the adverse weather condition of the Cape of Good Hope but failed miserably even after vowing to drift until the doomsday. Legend says that since then they have been cursed to sail the oceans for eternity. To this day, hundreds of fisherman and sailors from deep-sea have claimed to have witnessed the Flying Dutchman continuing its never-ending voyage across the waters.

The Caleuche
It is a legend of the Chilota mythology, where it is described as a ghost ship, which comes into being every night near the island of Chiloe. It says the ship carries the spirits of all the people who have drowned at sea. The Caleuche is strikingly beautiful, bright and gay as always surrounded by party music sounds and laughter.

The Lady Lovibond
An interesting story of love, jealousy and rage complements the tale of this haunted ship. In 1748, the day before the Valentine’s Day, it was set assail as a celebration of the ship’s captain’s wedding. Nevertheless, his friend, who was too in love with her, out of vengeance, steered the ship into the notorious Goodwind Sands, sinking it and killing all on-board. Since then it could be seen every fifty years sailing around Kent. 1798, 1848, 1898 and 1948 has witnessed this ship’s sightseeing and some boats had actually sent out rescuers, assuming it was in distress, but later could not be found. Albeit, there was not any confirmed spotting in 1998, this famous ghost ship continues to be a legend.

The Octavius
The Octavius became more than just a legend back in 1775, when a whaling ship named the Herald found it aimlessly drifting off the coast of Greenland with all of its crew frozen dead by the arctic cold. To add to the spooky environment, the ship’s captain was found sitting at his desk, with a logbook in front him, and finishing a log entry from 1762. Relating to this could mean that the Octavius had been floating for 13 years and completed its passage to the Atlantic while returning to England from the Orient via the Northwest Passage as a ghost ship.

The Joyita
In 1955 this fishing and charter boat was found abandoned in the South Pacific, five weeks after it had been reported overdue. The air-search mission could not trace it, until a merchant ship found it drifting almost 600 miles off its original source with no sign of crew and cargo. There was a doctor’s bag and several bloody bandages on the deck and the radio was tuned to the universal distress signal , but what happened actually there was never revealed as none of the crew was ever seen again.

The Baychimo
Built in the early 1920s this is one of the real-life ghost ship which was, in 1931, became trapped in the pack-ice near Alaska, leaving no hopes for the owner Hudson Bay Company but to abandon it. However, amazingly it remained adrift for the next 38 years and was frequently sighted floating aimlessly in the waters off Alaska .
Weather condition had always made it impossible to salvage, but since 1969, it has disappeared completely. A few expedition programmes had since been launched to trace back this mysterious ghost ship.

The Carroll A. Deering
This ship ran aground in the notorious Diamond Shoals near Cape Hatteras, North Carolina in 1921, where it was stuck for several days before any rescue team could arrive.  Later, the Coast Guard found that the equipment, logbook and two lifeboats were missing from the abandoned ship, otherwise undamaged. Investigation showed few other ships had also disappeared under mysterious circumstances around the same time, which could be the pirates’ barbarity, crews’ mutiny or extra terrestrial activity around the infamous Bermuda triangle.

The Ourang Medan
In 1947, two American ships, while passing through the Strait of Malacca, went off to a rescue mission after receiving a distress call from Ourang Medan. The caller claimed to be a crewmember and conveyed the message of death of everyone else on-board. His words weirdly ended with “I die”. The rescuers found the ship unharmed but the entire crew, including the dog, dead with terrified faces and expressions. Before further investigation, the abandoned ship caught fire and exploded. The probable reason could be over-exposure of nitroglycerin, which it was carrying illegally. The other mystery revolves around the story of paranormal activities and/or alien invasion.

The SS Valencia
In 1906, the SS Valencia sank off the coast of Vancouver, British Columbia after encountering bad weather near Cape Mendocino and thereafter became a subject of mysterious ghost stories. Eventually 37 of merely 108 people were saved using lifeboats , among which one simply disappeared.Since then, many a fisherman has claimed to witness ghost ship sightings with human skeletons even after many decades post sinking.

10 The Mary Celeste
Probably the most famous real-life ghost ships story embraces the Mary Celeste, found adrift in the Atlantic Ocean in 1872 in a completely unharmed condition with all its sails still up, the crew’s personal belongings intact and a cargo hold of over 1500 alcohol barrels untouched. The only things missing were the lifeboat, the captain’s logbook and most importantly, the entire crew. Since pirate’s attack could not be held responsible for such a phenomenon, theories of crew mutiny, waterspout killing, and consumption of poisonous food leading to madness came into being. However, the most reasonable explanation could there be a storm or some kind of technical issue, compelling the crew immediately abandon the ship in the lifeboat and die later at the sea. Apart from these, the mystery of this haunted ship surrounds with ghosts and even sea monsters and alien abduction theories.
